Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday celebrated the efforts of two Kuwaiti nationals, Abdullah Al Baroun and Abdul Lateef Al Nesef, for translating and publishing India’s revered epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata, in Arabic. Modi also signed copies of the translated works, which aim to introduce Indian heritage to the Arab world.
Highlighting Cultural Exchange
In a post on X, Modi stated, “I compliment Abdullah Al Baroun and Abdul Lateef Al Nesef for their efforts in translating and publishing these epics. Their initiative highlights the global popularity of Indian culture.” He described their work as “a bridge between two great cultures,” fostering a deeper understanding of Indian literature in the Arab world.
While Al Baroun undertook the translation, Al Nesef managed the publication, enabling a wider audience to engage with India’s rich cultural legacy. Modi had earlier acknowledged their contributions during his Mann Ki Baat address, emphasizing the role of cultural exchange in global harmony.
Meeting with a 101-Year-Old Diplomat
During his Kuwait visit, Modi met Mangal Sain Handa, a 101-year-old former Indian Foreign Service officer. The emotional interaction followed a request from Handa’s granddaughter, who had sought a meeting with Modi via social media. Modi praised Handa’s lifelong contributions to Indian diplomacy, previously acknowledging his 100th birthday in a heartfelt letter.
Warm Welcome from the Indian Diaspora
Modi received a rousing welcome from the vibrant Indian community in Kuwait, the largest expatriate group in the country, comprising over 1 million people. Expressing his gratitude, Modi remarked, “Their energy, love, and unwavering connection to India are truly inspiring.”
Strengthening Bilateral Relations
Kuwait, a key trading partner for India, accounted for $10.47 billion in bilateral trade during 2023-24 and remains a major crude supplier. The visit marks the first by an Indian Prime Minister in 43 years, with Modi attending high-profile events, including the opening of the 26th Arabian Gulf Cup, and holding discussions with Kuwaiti leaders to further strengthen ties.
The visit underscores India’s enduring friendship with Kuwait, rooted in historical maritime trade and shared cultural values.
